One quaint village in Hertfordshire has been described as one of the most haunted areas in the county.

The village of Datchworth, set between Stevenage, Hertford and Welwyn Garden City, is a small area, home to just 1,500 people.

But it seems people are not the only ones who call Datchworth home, with many reports of ghost sightings in the village.

The ghosts are said not to be the only spooky part of Datchworth, with the village's church said to have one haunting feature.

The village's All Saints Church looks like any typical church from a distance, but many suggest that its tower has a rather peculiar look.

The tower and roof have been described to look like a ‘witch’s hat’ with it’s tall spike and curved base.

It’s believed All Saints Church was built during the late 12th century and was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of women.

Despite the church’s calming demeanour, several ghost sightings have been reported at the church site and attached graveyard on Bury Lane.

YouTube ghost hunter, psyclonesteve, previously reported that people had heard “chattering sounds” in the graveyard, while others reported seeing “ghostly shadows” dancing on tombstones.

One local woman shared how she once heard unsettling noises while walking through the graveyard, describing the sounds as “a thousand chattering monkeys”.

Elsewhere in Datchworth, Rectory Lane is said to be a popular haunt for one particular ghost.

Co-author of the book Haunted Hertfordshire, Ruth Stratton, previously told the BBC that Datchworth has “spooks galore”, sharing that she knows of “at least 20 [ghosts] across the village”.

Ruth added that as a teenager, she would often visit Rector Lane with her friend and would hear stories of it being a “ghost-ridden lane.”

Sharing: “There’s supposed to be a ghostly cart that trundles along there [Rectory Lane] after dark.

"The story is that it’s taking paupers' bodies up to the grave pit at the churchyard.”
