Police deployed a stinger when a motorcyclist exited the A1(M) at Stevenage, having reached speeds in excess of 160mph on the motorway.

A spokesperson for Herts police said: "This motorbike was sighted by one of our units travelling in excess of 160mph!

"The vehicle exited the motorway, where a stinger was deployed at slower speeds.

"The rider chose to stop before being stung, and gave himself up to police.

"The rider was reported for various offences, including excess speed, riding without due care and attention / careless and inconsiderate riding.

"The vehicle was also seized to prevent further offences and similar anti-social riding."

A stinger is a device consisting of a spiked metal ribbon that is placed across a road to stop vehicles by puncturing their tyres.
