Two people have become trapped and six people have been hospitalised following a crash on the A600 Bedford Road, near Hitchin and Ickleford.

The incident took place prior to 1.04pm today (Monday, April 15) near to the junction with Holwell, when a grey Mercedes GLC and a grey Ford Grand C-Max collided.

Hertfordshire Constabulary, the East of England Ambulance Service and three fire engines have attended the scene, where an adult and a child had become trapped in one of the vehicles.

Both individuals have been released and are now in the care of paramedics.

The road is currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 1.12pm to reports of a collision between two vehicles on Bedford Road, Ickleford.

"Three fire engines from Letchworth & Baldock and Hitchin fire stations, were sent to the scene, where two people were trapped in one of the vehicles.

"Firefighters worked with the ambulance service to safely release one adult and one child from the vehicle, leaving them in the care of the ambulance service before making the scene safe."

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary added: "At around 1.04pm today (Monday 15 April) we were called to report a road traffic collision involving multiple vehicles on the A600 Bedford Road.

"The road is currently closed while emergency services are in attendance and the vehicles are recovered."

Lastly, a spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service commented: "Three ambulances, one ambulance officer vehicle and one rapid response vehicle were sent to Holwell Road Holwell this afternoon following reports of a road traffic collision.

"Six people including four children were transported to Lister Hospital for further assessment and care."
