Staff at Hertfordshire East’s RSPCA branch have spoken of their anguish after its Hitchin store was targeted by cruel thieves.

Over the last two weeks, the branch has seen a pair of shoes, a clock, a candle, and a pet item all stolen from its Churchyard shop.

The thefts occurred separately, with the clock stolen on March 8 and the rest of items taken during a spate of break ins on March 22.

Vicky Maslen, branch operations manager, said: “It’s really upsetting to think that thieves have targeted our charity shop, especially when all the items have been generously donated by our supporters who want to do their bit to help animals in the county.

“While it may not sound much has gone, if we continue to be targeted like this every week - then the loss of stock, which also includes the loss of gift aid, will run into hundreds of pounds if not more.”

The thefts come at a time when charities are feeling the pinch of the cost-of-living crisis and the branch have warned that its donation room is ‘almost empty’.

The money raised by these shops is vital for looking after animals, such as 12-year-old Shi Tzu dog Sweep, who is in urgent need of dental and eye surgery before he can be rehomed.

“Sweep is a Shih Tzu and is 12 years old and he is currently being looked after by one of our lovely foster carers," Vicky continued.

"Sweep isn’t available for rehoming yet, as he needs vet treatment for urgent dental and eye surgery - and this will be paid for by the funds raised in our shop and generous donations from the public."

The branch has appealed for donations, and you can drop off any donations you can spare to the shop at 19 Churchyard, Hitchin SG5 1HP.
