The driver of a car that crashed into Hitchin's River Hiz avoided injury, police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the Portmill Lane East Car Park just before 5pm on Saturday, after a car had smashed through the barriers and become submerged in the water.

The car was lifted from the Hiz just before 7pm, with Comet reporter Dan Mountney at the scene to capture the moment.

Herts police have now confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, a black SUV, avoided injury and quickly escaped from the vehicle.

"Police were called at just after 5pm on Saturday (February 24) to reports that a vehicle had entered the River Hiz off Portmill Lane in Hitchin," said a Herts police spokesperson.

"Officers attended alongside the Herts Fire and Rescue Service. On arrival the driver had already safely exited the vehicle and water.

"No injuries were reported. The vehicle was recovered around 7pm."
