THE widower and two daughters of a woman who was run down and killed by a car four years ago have won a £240,000 compensation deal at London's High Court.

Kulvinder Bains was aged just 36 when the VW Golf car mounted the kerb, crossed the grass verge and hit her in Pixmore Way, Letchworth GC, on August 22, 2002. She died in hospital a few hours later.

Her husband, Jasbinder Singh Bains, now 43, of Baldock Road, Letchworth GC, was quickly on the scene and suffered the trauma of seeing his wife gravely injured.

Also left to grieve were Mrs Bains' two young daughters, now aged 12 and 10.

Mr Bains sued the Golf's driver - Shaun Donovan Stuart, of Campers Avenue, Letchworth GC - whose motor insurers admitted liability and on Tuesday agreed to settle the family's claim for £240,000.

After a brief court hearing, Mr Justice Grigson said he had "no hesitation" in approving the settlement, more than £100,000 of which will be paid into court for the two girls' benefit.

The family's counsel, Richard Booth, said outside court that Mr Bains had also sued for damages over the psychiatric injuries he suffered as a result of the tragedy. That claim has also been settled, but on confidential terms.
