Constituencies across Hertfordshire are set to be shaken up after the Boundary Commission for England submitted its final recommendations for changes.

The Commission was tasked with changing constituency boundaries to ensure that seats contain similar numbers of voters.

In Hertfordshire, the biggest changes see the Hitchin and Harpenden constituency split up, with a new Hitchin constituency stretching over the border into Bedfordshire, and Harpenden joining Berkhamsted and Tring in another constituency.

The recommendations will now be sent to the Privy Council for approval, and will take effect ahead of the next general election, which must be held no later than January 2025.

These are the first changes to constituency boundaries since 2010, with England set to gain ten seats - giving it 543 of the 650 constituencies.

How will the changes affect your constituency?

Harpenden and Berkhamsted

This was previously the South West Hertfordshire constituency - the Commission decided that a "substantial reconfiguration" was needed "to limit further change elsewhere in the county". The new constituency stretches from Tring in the east, through Berkhamsted, to Harpenden in the west. It also includes two wards from Dacorum, Watling and Ashridge.

Counter-proposals to move Sandridge from this constituency to St Albans were rejected.

Hemel Hempstead

With Watling and Ashridge wards moving to the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency, more wards had to be moved into this constituency to bring it up to the required size.

Bovingdon, Flaunden and Chipperfield wards have therefore been moved to this constituency from South West Hertfordshire.

The Kings Langley ward has been removed, however, and will now be in Three Rivers.

Hertsmere

This constituency will now include Northaw & Cuffley, part of the Borough of Welwyn Hatfield and formerly part of the Broxbourne constituency.

Bushey North has been moved to an adjusted Watford constituency.

Hitchin

This constituency includes the town of Hitchin and three wards from within Central Bedfordshire - Stotfold and Langford, Arlesey, and Shefford.

Counter-proposals for this constituency to include Biggleswade were rejected.

Mid Bedfordshire

Mid Bedfordshire was above the permitted size for an electorate, so Shefford has been moved to the new Hitchin constituency which straddles the border between Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. The boundary has also been adjusted slightly to account for changes to local government wards.

North Bedfordshire

North East Bedfordshire was above the permitted size for an electorate, so Stotfold and Langford have been moved to the new Hitchin constituency. The name of the constituency has been changed to North Bedfordshire.

North East Hertfordshire

Unchanged, except for slight adjustments based on changes to local government wards.

St Albans

Stevenage

Welwyn Hatfield
