Saxmundham: Park House period home is for sale for £1.25m

Park House is for sale with Suffolk Coastal for £1.25m and is one of the town’s most notable residences. A spokesperson for the firm says it still retains the “distinguished feel of a country house” despite work to update it.

The property is believed to have been constructed in the 1850s for John Charles Crampin, a successful stock valuer and grocer who owned several properties in the area.

It was later owned by the Towers family, who often held bible classes there. During their tenure, it’s said that General Booth – founder of the Salvation Army – stayed at the property.

After that, Park House was occupied by Rhoisia and Bridget Copinger-Hill, twin debutantes with a keen interest in archaeology. The twins were friends with Edith Pretty, and just before the Second World War, they worked with Charles Philips and Basil Brown on the famous excavations at Sutton Hoo.

The twins are said to have been well-known for their interesting parties and, on snowy days, they would sometimes ski down to the local high street to shop.

While there, they converted the former gig house – where a carriage was stored – into a home for their housekeeper and gardener, and the following owner also made several extensions and updates to the house.

In 1998, the current owners bought the property and have made it into a spacious family home.

Inside, it has several excellent entertaining spaces, including a 36ft kitchen with a dining area under a vaulted ceiling, and separate sitting and drawing rooms.

There is also a study, library and utility space on the ground floor, plus a cloakroom and access to a cellar.

Upstairs, there are six bedrooms and two family bathrooms – including one which has a bath and separate shower can be accessed from both the landing and the second bedroom.

Outside Park House there is a terrace area constructed in the former conservatory, as well as a large decked area around the back.

The large driveway is flanked by lime trees on either side and leads to a generous parking area and the front garden is mainly laid to lawn.

Also included within the grounds is an orchard, small kitchen garden and converted stable cottage, which provides three bedrooms, including one en suite, as well as a sitting room, kitchen and shower room.
