A busy Wiltshire road has been closed following a crash between two vehicles.

The crash happened at around midday on bank holiday Monday, May 29, and as of 5pm the same day, emergency services had been at the scene since then.

Drivers have been warned by Wiltshire Police to avoid the A4 near West Kennett, Marlborough, otherwise, they risked being impacted by a series of roadblocks that have been put in place.

There are at least four police blocks around the scene of the crash as well as a full road closure at the Bell pub and at West of the Avenue causing issues for people driving through the area.

The first, at The Burj at the Bell, resulted in many vehicles having to use the pub car park to turn around, including a very frustrated Waitrose delivery driver who had quite a job turning his HGV in the small space.

More blocks are in place turning right from East Kennet towards West Kennett/The Sanctuary, turning left on the A4 from the B4003, Avebury, and you can't go on to the A4 at Beckhampton roundabout.

Marlborough Police announced the crash and the road closures caused by it on its Facebook page at around 1.30pm, but at the time did not reveal any further details about the severity of the crash, if anyone has been injured, or how long the closure will remain in place.

The full statement from the spokesperson said: "We are responding to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on the A4 near West Kennett, Marlborough.

The incident happened just after midday.

We'd urge drivers to avoid the area and the road has been closed at the Bell pub and at West of the Avenue.

"We will post updates here when possible."

Later, the Wiltshire Specialist Ops Twitter page made a Twitter post about the incident, informing members of the public that 'detailed investigation work' was underway.

The Tweet said: "#RPU are at scene dealing with a serious collision on the A4, the road will be closed for detailed investigation work. Diversions are in place, please follow directions and don’t push through the closures."

A follow-up tweet added: "Road is closed from Beckhampton to Marlborough."

The Wilts Specialist Ops post also included a picture which showed a number of police cars and a fire engine parked on the A4.
