Stevenage: Refurbished Shephalbury Park tennis courts reopen

The courts, in Shephalbury Park, were reopened on Sunday (May 21) following "extensive work" which ensured that the facilities are viable "for years to come".

The improvements included the courts being completely resurfaced and painted green with blue surrounds.

Repairs have been made to the fencing, and a new gate has been installed with a "unique gate entry system" to enable online bookings.

Signage has been installed, and overhanging shrubbery has been cut back to avoid foliage dropping on to the courts.

The improvements have been made as part of a nationwide programme of investment, refurbishing tennis courts that have deteriorated in recent times.

Over 2,000 courts have received investment across Britain, with renovations managed and funded by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the UK Government.

The reopening of Shephalbury Park's tennis courts was attended by 120 Stevenage residents, along with the town's deputy mayor Cllr Myla Arceno, leader of the council Cllr Richard Henry, the LTA's Ed Nieburg and Cllr Simon Speller.

The leader of Stevenage Borough Council, Cllr Richard Henry, said: "It was fantastic to see so many people of varying abilities and ages join us for the open day showing off their tennis skills and having fun.

"The courts are now available to book, and I hope that they will encourage even more people to take part in the sport, which will have a positive impact on their physical and mental wellbeing.

Julie Porter, the LTA's chief operating officer, said: "After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts in Stevenage officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever.

"Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis.

"Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come."
