A 'petrified' witness has told a court how six armed and masked men burst into her Suffolk home and attacked her partner after claiming to be the police.

Madison Finley said the raiders armed with knives, a hammer and a crowbar shouted 'open the door mate, it's the police' before breaking into the Brandon home to assault her boyfriend shortly after midnight on September 22.

Renell Johnson, of Breeze Terrace, Cheshunt, has denied a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm in relation to the incident.

The couple had been in bed when Madison was woken by banging on the front door and the victim had tried to stop the group from getting into the bedroom by using his body weight to force the door closed, but a metal hanger prevented him from closing the door.

Madison, who hid under the bed covers screaming, told Ipswich Crown Court: "I was petrified, I did not know what was going on. I just did not want to move. I thought it would just go away."

During the sustained attack, one of the balaclava-clad raiders sustained a cut to the head from a machete used by the victim and had to be ushered out of the room by two accomplices before the three remaining assailants also left.

At one point, the injured man had to remove his balaclava enabling the witness to see his bloody face and she described him as having 'black, short, spiky hair' and being 'dark-skinned'.

Another man, described by Madison as 6ft tall and skinny, had jumped on the bed and said 'shut the f*** up Maddie' suggesting that he knew her.

Mr Johnson has also pleaded not guilty to burglary at an address in Edmund Road, Brandon, on September 22 last year with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
