A mum who sustained a broken nose and two black eyes when she fell on a trip to visit where her father's ashes are scattered is reaching out to the "wonderful people" who came to her aid.

On Saturday afternoon, Rosemary Kitchener was getting out of her car at Hitch Wood, on the outskirts of Hitchin, when she slipped down a grassy bank, stumbled into the road and fell face first into a grassy bank on the opposite side of the road.

"It was my own clumsy fault," she said, "but I cannot thank the people who came to help me enough.

"I was bleeding like crazy and a lovely lady and gentleman helped by providing lots of tissues and assitance.

"Another gentleman drove my husband's car to the side of the road I was on.

"Other people, including cyclists, stopped to see if I was alright and to help me up, so I could get back in the car with my husband.

"People do show they're wonderful sometimes, and it restores your faith in humanity.

"I didn't get a chance to thank these people personally. It all happened so quickly and I was so shaken I didn't think."

The incident happened at about 3.30pm on Saturday, when Rosemary and her husband had set out on their annual visit to Hitch Wood, to see the site where Rosemary's father's ashes are scattered, and to look at the carpet of bluebells.

"We had only just got there, so we didn't get to do it," explained Rosemary, who lives in Meppershall, adding that the glimpse of bluebells she did see looked "beautiful".

She said: "Luckily, I was with my husband, so he drove us home and then to Bedford Hospital.

"I have to go back to the hospital once the swelling has gone down to have another xray, before the doctors are able to do anything.

"My face is feeling more painful now, but I'm being well looked after by my family, who are cooking my meals.

"Thank you again to everyone who helped me on the day. It's very much appreciated."
