From celebrated actors and authors, to footballers and golfers, Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth have been home plenty of stars over the years.

Here's 7 you might not have known had links to our area.

1. Laurence Olivier - Letchworth

One of the celebrated actors in British history grew up in Letchworth, with Olivier moving to the town aged 11, when his father, Gerard Kerr Olivier, was appointed minister of St Mary's Church in 1918.

He would go on to achieve a storied and successful film career, appearing in a seemingly never-ending list of cinema classics, including Wuthering Heights, Henry V, Hamlet, Richard III, Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far.

Olivier was also an icon of the stage, founding the Royal National Theatre in 1963.

For his on-screen work he won four Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, five Emmy Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards.

The National Theatre's largest auditorium is named in his honour, and he is commemorated in the Laurence Olivier Awards, given annually by the Society of London Theatre.

2. Ian Poulter - Hitchin

Born in Hitchin and raised in Stevenage, Poulter is one of golfs most recognisable names.

He has won three PGA Tour events and two World Golf Championships, but it's at the Ryder Cup when he really comes alive.

Nicknamed the "Postman", because he always delivers, he was the highest scoring player at the 2008 edition, and impressed again in 2010.

His finest hour would be 2012 though, when as one of Team Europe's captains he help the team turn around a 10-6 deficit to secure victory in the "Miracle at Medinah".

3. Ed Westwick - Stevenage

The actor was raised in Stevenage, and attended both The Barclay School and North Hertfordshire College.

After appearing in episodes of Doctors and Casualty, Westwick got his big break in 2007, starring as Charles "Chuck" Bass is in Gossip Girl.

Another defining role came in 2017, when a played the role of Vincent Swan in White Gold, a British sitcom about a group of UPVC window salesmen in the mid-1980s.

He has also appeared on the big screen, acting in the likes of Breaking and Entering, Son of Rambow, S. Darko and Chalet Girl.

4. Kevin Phillips - Hitchin

Born in Hitchin, the footballer started his career at Baldock Town in 1991, but by late 90s and early 2000s, he was among the Premier League's most feared strikers.

Phillips scored 30 goals in just 36 games for Sunderland in the 1999-2000 season, and was a prolific goalscorer throughout his career, netting 282 times across his 23-year career.

He also earned eight caps for England and was named in the squad for Euro 2000, but failed to score for the Three Lions.

He now manages South Shields.

5. George Orwell - Wallington

Who would have thought that Wallington, a small North Hertfordshire village near Baldock, would be home to one of literature's great authors?

George Orwell, the author behind Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, lived there from 1936 to 1940.

He resided in a small cottage at 2 Kits Lane, known as The Stores, married his first wife in the village church, and wrote The Road to Wigan Pier and Homage to Catalonia while living in Wallington.

6. Gina Coladangelo - Hitchin

Born in Hitchin, Coladangelo is a businesswoman, lobbyist, and a former non-executive director at the Department of Health and Social Care.

But, it was in 2021 when she became a household name, after images leaked of her and then secretary of state for health and social care, Matt Hancock, kissing and embracing, at a time when social distancing restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

7. Simon West - Letchworth

Born in Letchworth, West has directed some of Hollywood's biggest Blockbusters, including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Con Air and The Expendables 2.

He also directed the famous music video for Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up.
