Whether you’re searching for an idyllic, relaxing retreat in the countryside, or the perfect backdrop for an event or wedding, then look no further.

Here to offer her expert advice on finding the perfect staycation spot, we catch up with Charlotte Maddams of Cotswold Leisure.

Below, she shares her thoughts on what makes Kateshill House in Bewdley so special for weekend breaks or special occasions.

A stunning Georgian manor building filled with history

“A bed and breakfast should make you feel at home,” says Charlotte, “so you can sit back, relax and be as comfortable as you would be in your own space.

“We have recently renovated Kateshill, which means guests can enjoy new towels and gowns amongst a host of modern renovations, whilst retaining all original beautiful features that characterise the property.”

When you’re spending time and money on a staycation with your loved ones, you deserve only the best. “With a woodburning fire in the living room, featherweight mattresses to collapse into and cosy bedrooms furnished with comfortable sofas, the place is truly a home away from home and a real hidden gem,” Charlotte tells us.

The Grade II listed Georgian building is situated on two acres of land and nestled in the heart of the Worcester countryside, near the Cotswolds. “It’s the perfect country retreat for a weekend of afternoon walks, breath-taking landscapes and lazy Sunday brunches,” she explains.

“There is no reception, so guests can enjoy a homey feel when they arrive, and the living room is an ideal spot to escape to and spend an afternoon reading a book.”

Charlotte tells us how all the bedrooms at Kateshill House are bespoke, ensuring no room is the same. As a nod to the building’s history, notably when Queen Mary Tudor stayed during her reign, each bedroom is named after a Tudor queen.

“Tickenhill Manor, now the grounds of Kateshill House, was the place of Arthur Tudor and Catherine of Aragon’s proxy marriage in 1499,” Charlotte reveals. The historic Bewdley Sweet Chestnut tree (planted during the 16th Century to commemorate the marriage) can still be found located in the grounds of Kateshill. “It was chosen as one of the 50 Great British Tree’s to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” she adds. “So, this is an incredibly exciting spot for anyone who enjoys learning about the history of the places they stay in.”

It’s an ideal location for exploring the Cotswolds countryside

“Location is another really important factor to consider when looking for places to stay,” Charlotte says. Kateshill House is situated just outside the quaint village of Bewdley, near the Cotswolds, making it the perfect base for those wanting to visit.

“The appeal of the Cotswolds is its seclusion,” she says, “and while you’ll want to enjoy the beauty of your surroundings in peace, it’s sensible to opt for a location that remains close to local amenities for food and activities.

“Which is why Kateshill really is the best spot for a bed and breakfast. The House has its own driveway and is free of any disturbance or noise, but is a short walking distance from the village, where you can wander down for lunch and an afternoon stroll or for dinner and drinks in the evening.”

Charlotte tells us about the plans for Kateshill House to expand into more than just breakfast - “We offer afternoon tea and are also looking to begin Sunday lunch too, but the restaurants down in the village are also perfect for the kind of relaxed, cosy atmosphere our guests would be looking for during their retreat.”

The location of Kateshill House allows you to explore and experience the very best of the Cotswolds all year-round. “We’re so lucky to be located where we are – being so close to the village in the heart of the countryside, whilst being situated right on the commuter routes. It really is the best of both worlds,” Charlotte says. “Whenever you decide to visit, there will always be new walking routes to explore and exciting things to do while you’re here.”

The grounds are the perfect backdrop for any event

Kateshill is available to book for all events, from birthday and anniversaries to christenings and weddings. “We’re also looking to begin gin and wine-tastings, too,” Charlotte tells us. “For bigger events, there’s room to cater for up to 70 people inside our luxurious ground floor rooms, with the option for a marquee outside in the nicer weather.

“Whether you’d like to hire the venue for just an evening or the entire day including accommodation and handling of your invitations, we tailor each package to meet your every need,” she says. “All our bespoke packages include hire of the house and grounds for your wedding day, enabling you to enjoy the venue exclusively for yourselves.”

There are plenty of nearby attractions to keep you busy

There are so many things to do for all ages to keep you busy in the surrounding area. Renowned for its fascinating past, Worcester is a must-visit for anyone interested in history.

“The cathedral is a popular tourist spot, there is endless shopping facilities, and the safari park is also a short drive away to entertain the kids with a fun-filled day out,” she explains. “Kateshill is also within driving distance of Worcester, so it’s accessible for everything you could need whilst offering the seclusion of a peaceful and village-like atmosphere.

“The Malvern Hills are only half an hour away and well worth a visit – the views are absolutely stunning, and you won’t be disappointed.”
