The Welwyn Garden City Band is "thrilled" to have won fourth place in the London and Southern Counties Brass Band Regional Contest.

The contest took place at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre yesterday (March 19).

The band played Chorale and Toccata by Stephen Bulla in the competition against 18 other bands.

This puts the band in a strong position for a chance of promotion to the second section next year.

The adjudicators, Andrea Price and Anne Crookston, said "there was much to admire in their performance that grew in confidence" and there was a "lovely shimmer from the muted cornets and a great band sound".

Musical director Will Douglas, who started conducting the band in May 2022, said: “I am thrilled with the bands placing and immensely proud of all that they have achieved over the last 10 months. We look forward to the future and our push for promotion in 2024."

The Welwyn Garden City Band has been making music since 1934 and looks forward to their next performance at Hertford Castle for the Kings Coronation weekend on Sunday, May 7 starting at noon.

The performance is free and all are invited to listen in.
