Rotary in Saffron Walden is distributing more than £8,000 to local charities from its Christmas collection, a race night and a bequest from a former Rotarian.

Fourteen charities will benefit from the donation, including those supporting sick children, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Three of the beneficiaries, Saffron Walden Mencap, Sophie's Fund and the outreach service of Uttlesford Citizens Advice have received funds from the legacy of former Rotarian Don Purkiss.

Current president David Riley said: "Don had been a stalwart member of Rotary for over 50 years and his special request for local people in need to benefit from his legacy was typical of his very kind attitude and support for local people."

The annual Christmas collection raised £5,700 thanks to the generosity of the community.

Rotary's community service chairman Matthew Pollitt said: "We owe the community a huge thank you and as in previous years Rotary is especially indebted to Boots, Tesco and Waitrose, who were most supportive in allowing collections with background seasonal music to take place outside their stores.

"On some days the collection was also enhanced by the Tinkerbells hand-bell ringers who brought a truly Christmas atmosphere on the very cold December days."

Matthew also thanked his fellow Rotarians, supporters and friends, including the Inner Wheel Club, Round Table and Probus Club.
