New city centre bins are to be monitored after worries about doors being potentially dangerous in windy conditions were raised.

The doors on the St Stephens Street bins, installed as part of £6.1m work which has been branded a "waste of money", have been spotted coming off latches.

Marcus Moore, from Sprowston, was getting off his bus on Saturday evening (January 21) when one burst open, with its door flapping in the wind.

Norwich Evening News:

He said: "I'm not sure if they're leaving them unlocked by accident or if the lock isn't strong enough.

"I was able to avoid it but they really are quite vicious."

Norwich Evening News:

A Norwich City Council spokeswoman said waste disposal teams would be checking the bins and closing them when needed as they empty them.

She said: "I’ve spoken to the team and they haven’t had many reports about the doors coming open on these bin storage areas.

"They are the same design as we have elsewhere in the city."

Open bins can be reported at norwich.gov.uk/report.
