The festival that celebrates science is back from Saturday, February 11 to Saturday, February 18.

Presented by The Forum, Norwich Science Festival combines cutting-edge research with fantastic events; revealing the fascinating science of the world around us.

As part of the eight-day festival, there’s a collection of ‘Science after Six’ events for adults only, with plenty of laugh-along lectures, taboo topics, deep dives and chances to get involved.

Boogie on the Brain (February 14 at The Halls) is a quirky evening of psychology, science and dancing. Be prepared to get involved, but no previous experience will be necessary!

Dr Peter Lovatt (aka Dr Dance) explores why we love to boogie in this unique evening. He’ll take you through key ideas in cognitive psychology and along the way teach you some fun, simple dance routines. Perfect for an alternative Valentine’s night out, either on your own, with friends or as a couple.

Join neuroscientist Prof Barbara Sahakian, psychologist Prof Viren Swami and comedian and author of The Breakup Monologues, Rosie Wilby, on February 14 at Norwich Arts Centre to discuss ‘Heartbreak: necessary process or by-product of love?’ Why does it happen, and what can we do to get through it?

On February 16, there will also be a live recording of Science Shambles, the podcast where world-leading scientists chat about science, from cutting-edge research and big ideas to popular science books and documentaries.

In this live recording, host Dr Helen Czerski will talk to materials scientist and engineer Prof Mark Miodownik. In true style of The Cosmic Shambles Network, the approach is fun, open and accessible for everyone whether you’ve got a PhD in astrophysics or are simply curious about how this universe works.

Dr Kathryn Harkup will explore the world of Superspy Science on the same day. Science and technology have always been central to the world of James Bond – and this talk will look at 007’s exploits from the practicalities of building a volcano-based lair, to the dangers of being covered in gold paint, and whether bacteria, bombs or poison is the best plan for taking over the world.

Whether you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, Out Thinkers on February 11 celebrates the fantastic and diverse STEM community in Norfolk with a series of talks and the chance to network with local LGBTQ+ scientists.

Learn about how frisky plants can be, how worms are teaching us the secrets to living longer, and finally how our environment is affecting fertility in the Pint of Science Special at The Forum Café Bar Marzano on February 15. There will also be opportunities for hands-on activities guided by experts with nematodes and zebrafish during the breaks.

The Big C Charity and a panel of exclusive guests will be sharing a special preview of short film ‘Rose’, followed by a Q&A with the director Charlotte Couture and producer Tom Scurr. The panel will discuss the film and the reality of life after cancer.

Have you ever wondered about the history and science of our quest to explore other planets? Join Dallas Campbell and Professor Suzie Imber for ‘How to leave a planet’ at Norwich School on February 16, from our first tentative footsteps to the latest space missions.
