Emergency services were called to a house fire in Stevenage during the early hours of this morning, and an investigation into the cause has now been launched.

At 4.37am today (Friday, December 9), Herts Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call to report a bedroom fire in Wisden Road in Stevenage.

Four fire engines, from Stevenage, Letchworth & Baldock and Hitchin fire stations were sent to the scene, where crews found a "well developed" blaze in the first floor bedroom of a terraced house.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus searched the property and evacuated neighbouring houses, before extinguishing the fire.

A spokesperson for Herts Fire and Rescue Service said: "Everyone was safely accounted for and the fire was out by 5:40am."

Police were called by the fire service at just before 4.40am today to advise that firefighters were at the scene of the fire.

Police officers attended to provide assistance at the scene, and a Herts police spokesperson said: "Investigations are continuing this morning to establish the cause of the fire".
