A team of intrepid cyclists from Purwell Primary School in Hitchin have made their competitive debuts in the Herts and Beds ‘Muddy Monsters’ cyclocross winter series over the past fortnight.

The Year 4 and 5 pupils joined the Muddy Monsters Cyclocross Season, an eight-round winter racing championship, tackling technical circuits made all the more challenging by recent downpours.

The Welwyn Wheelers hosted the first round, where riders negotiated slippery, tight corners in chilly conditions.

Purwell’s Remi Clark starred with a silver medal in the girl’s U10s, placing third in the sprint race and second in the endurance race.

Later that day other club members spent the afternoon in Ashwell as CCA (Ashwell Cycle Club) hosted them at their weekly training session to allow pupils to familiarise themselves with the club’s circuit.

Purwell achieved two further podium finishes to add to Remi’s medal from week one.

Raffi Caneppele-Masters, Year 4, took gold in the U10 boys, while Evie Nightingale pushed Ashwell’s gold medallist Florence Chaloner hard as she enjoyed her first taste of racing.

The school club is targeting more points in the coming rounds of racing and "hope this is the start of something special".
