Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is at the top of the leader board for the growth of electric vehicle charging points provision in the UK.

Citroën’s latest figures show analysis of the latest government data which shows the percentage growth of EV charging points per 100,000 people in Britain.

The analysis shows a substantial 754 per cent rise in the number of public chargers in the borough, with 90.4 public chargers per 100,000 people which is up from 10.6 per 100,000 in October 2019.

The progress is part of a nationwide drive to increase the take-up of electric vehicles as the government’s 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars approaches.

Councillor Bernard Sarson, executive member for parking at WHBC, said: “We’re pleased to see that we have made great progress on EV charging points. While it’s great to get this recognition, we also acknowledge that we have a long way to go locally and nationally to meet the net zero target by 2030.

“Improving our EV charging infrastructure and working to protect our natural environment are key parts of our long-term commitment to tackling climate change. We constantly strive to find ways to work sustainably within the council, with a fleet of EVs now available for use by our employees.

“We will continue to explore avenues to expand the EV infrastructure in the borough even further while utilising the government grants available.”

The council is looking at ways to increase the public infrastructure. Those who wish to have their own dedicated EV charging point can take advantage of grant schemes available through the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles.
