An arrest has been made following the reported assault of a woman in Hitchin last week - and police are now hoping to trace a good Samaritan who helped her.

Around 9.45am on Wednesday, November 16, the victim was walking along Bedford Road, near the BP garage, when a man pulled to a stop in his car, got out and an altercation ensued.

Another man, who was driving a black van pulled over and intervened, but left the scene before the police arrived.

A 68-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and is currently on police bail while enquiries continue.

Investigating officer, PC Christopher Blount, said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the victim and we are doing all we can to support her. This is being treated as an isolated incident involving parties who are known to each other.

“As part of our ongoing investigation, I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, particularly the van driver who stopped to intervene, to please contact me at Christopher.Blount@herts.police.uk with any information you may have.

“If you were driving in the area and have a dash cam fitted, please check it as you may have captured some important footage.”
