Knitted postbox toppers marking this year’s Remembrance Day have been appearing across Stevenage.

The toppers feature poppies and other remembrance-related details, including soldiers and helmets.

A group of Stevenage postbox knitters was formed two years ago, as the country was plunged into the second Covid lockdown. Since then, it has grown with more and more people getting involved.

They have raised money for various charities around occasions such as Christmas, Easter and Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. Now, they are raising money for the Royal British Legion with their efforts.

One of the knitters said: “We started making the toppers during the pandemic, to relieve boredom, to raise the spirits of the community and to help raise money for local charities via the QR codes that are attached to the postboxes.

“It’s great to be able to combine the fundraising with my passion for knitting and crocheting.

“I have made some lovely like-minded friends in the Stevenage Post Box Knitters Facebook group and we are all grateful for the kind yarn donations which have been dropped off for distribution to Jo at Cardies shop in the High Street. Stocks have diminished, so all contributions will be gratefully received.”

Another knitter said: “I made it in honour of my late grandad, and the other naval family’s missing their loved ones. Hopefully it helps raise some money for the Royal British Legion – all the toppers look amazing and the ladies making them are extremely talented.
