MOTORISTS have complained after noticing messages on two traffic information signs can’t be read as they are hidden by trees.
The Comet reported two weeks ago that a series of messages from national campaigns were being introduced on a dozen signs which cost £201,000 and are meant to provide real-time traffic updates around the Stevenage area.
‘Don’t drink and drive’ has been displayed around the town but the message cannot be seen on two of the signs, the Comet has been told.
Christopher Baynes sent a picture of one of the hidden signs in London Road, Stevenage, via social networking site Twitter.
He wrote: “Here’s one I spotted yesterday, nicely hidden behind a tree. You could only read it when next to it.”
Andy Sears also tweeted his objections to the Comet.
He said: “Have a look at the electronic sign in Graveley High Street, cannot read it because of tree in the way. What a waste of money!”
A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council, which has overseen the introduction of the signs, said: “We haven’t had any reports of the signs being obscured by vegetation, but if members of the public report any issues via our fault reporting line www.hertsdi rect.org/highwayfaults then we will look into it.”
He added that a problem with the placement of a sign in Hitchin Road, Stevenage, which caused an obstruction to a cycle path, has now been resolved after the support poles were “cranked outwards”.
