Wokingham Town, St Albans and an away day thrashing at Chesham United
This little period between October 20-26 appears to have been, more often than not, a pretty fruitful one for Boro.
Out of the 40-plus league and FA Cup games played at this time of the year, we’ve lost seven times. Not bad, really…
It is such an impressive run that we almost feel bad for focusing on one of the rare defeats; one that occurred on October 21, 1992.
Life in the Diadora League Premier Division wasn’t expected to be easy after two successive promotions in as many years, but we hadn’t made too bad a start – three wins, one draw and three defeats in our opening seven games.
After losing 3-0 at Wokingham Town on October 3, Boro had to wait nearly three weeks for their next league game – a period in which they’d been edged out of the FA Cup by St Albans.
But hopes of a winning return to league action were to be crushed at Chesham United.
The attendance that night was strangely appropriate – the crowd of 710 saw the hosts run riot, scoring seven against a Boro team who only mustered a solitary Martin Gittings strike in consolation.
It remains the club’s record away defeat – certainly in the league, and maybe a record defeat full stop – with a 7-0 home reverse against Southwick in 1987-8 the other contender.
Chesham United were crowned champions that year – scoring 104 goals along the way – but they didn’t go up to the Conference. The following year, we did.
