Headlines in May included a schoolgirl who reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent, plans for a £2.9 million cancer centre and the reinstatement of an MP back from the Australian jungle.
? Buildings were evacuated after an ammonia leak. The leak came from a building occupied by the TII Group in Blackhorse Road Letchworth GC. The road was closed and all building adjacent to the area were evacuated while a decontamination area was set up. No one was hurt.
? Nadine Dorries was reinstated by the Conservative Party as an MP for Mid Bedfordshire. The MP had previously been suspended after appearing on the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! in November.
During her suspension she had been standing as an independent but was given the Conservative whip back by Sir George Young.
? Gabz Gardiner from Stevenage made the final of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent. The 14-year-old from Nobel School finished in seventh place after a public vote.
? Unsung heroes were honoured for their work within the community at the Comet Community Awards. The youngest winner was 11-year-old Tommy Kane who was called a “little hero” after his quick thinking saved his mother from having skin grafts when she was scalded in an accident.
? A planning application was approved for the £2.9 million Macmillan Cancer Centre at Lister Hospital in Stevenage.
Stevenage Borough Council approved the plans which will see the centre, due to open by the middle of next year. double Lister’s chemotherapy capacity and create a dedicated information and support centre for patients and families.
