The inquest into the death of a man shot in Libya is expected to open this morning (Thursday).
Mark De Salis, who lived in Shackleton Spring in Stevenage and was a pupil at The Thomas Alleyne School in the town, was killed on January 2. His body was discovered with the body of New Zealander Lynn Howie on a beach near the coastal area of Mellitah. The 46-year-old had worked in the captal Tripoli for six years, bringing generators to the area to provide electricity.
It is understood the pair, described by his family as “close friends”, were having a picnic when they were both shot in the back of the head. The reason for the killings is not yet known.
The inquest into the death of Mr De Salis is expected to open at 11am at The Coroners Court in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, when it will be formally adjourned by coroner Tom Osborne until September 22.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is calling on the Libyan government to conduct a full investigation into the murders.
