Residents have spoken out against a plan to build on a green space used by children and dog walkers.

A planning application has been submitted by Stevenage Borough Council proposing two four-bedroom houses to be built on land in Marlborough Road, Stevenage.

Resident Sally Lorimer, who has lived in the street for 19 years, opposes the plan and believes that, because consultation letters were distributed over Christmas, the council will not receive a representative response.

She said: “I haven’t spoken to anyone in the area who is supportive of this proposal. The green space is often used by children.

“Aside from that, the restrictions on parking in the area means congestion on this street will go from bad to worse.”

Fellow resident Kimberley Knights said: “I am disheartened to think what little green area there is here will disappear. The area is used extensively by dog walkers and for young children to play in.

“The road already suffers severe parking restrictions and this new development will only make the problem worse. I hope this plan is refused as I believe it will seriously damage the quality of life in this area.”

A spokesman for Stevenage Borough Council said after carrying out a review, land on Marlborough Road was identified as a site which could be used for much-needed housing.

She added: “If the council, in its capacity as the local planning authority, grants planning permission, then its intent is to sell the site.”
