A man proposed to his girlfriend live on television on Saturday after undergoing three secret challenges.

Lewis Davies, from Stevenage, proposed to his partner Laura Knowles during the weekend episode of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV.

Laura, 31, who was unaware of her boyfriend’s plans, was taken on stage and watched three clips of Lewis taking part in challenges based around other ITV programmes.

He jumped from the 10m diving board in front of an audience during filming for Splash!, performed an ice skating routine on the Dancing On Ice set, and held a spider in his mouth for 20 seconds after flying out to Australia to visit the I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! set.

Clips of Lewis running through the middle of a football match and changing into a suit were shown before he appeared on stage and got down on one knee.

After Laura said ‘yes’, the couple were told by presenters Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly that they would also be treated to a seven-night all inclusive holiday in Cyprus to celebrate.

Lewis had to train for and film each event without Laura finding out – a process that took almost two months.

The 26-year-old said: “It was an absolute nightmare at some points. Luckily some of her friends helped out and distracted her with evenings out and other jobs. I would tell her I was going for a drink one night; another night it would be that I was attending a jujitsu class.

“I found the scariest challenge to be jumping from the 10m diving board. I had just as much time to prepare for it as the other two but I absolutely hated waiting at the top for my signal to jump. It was the longest two minutes of my life.

“Once the cameras were off, Laura just couldn’t stop laughing and crying. She stared at the ring for about an hour. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m glad it went so well.”

The couple, who have been together for two years, have already begun planning for their wedding but are yet to decide an official date.
