Cameron Lancaster and Charlie Lee formed an effective partnership with both finding the net in Boro’s 3-2 victory over AFC Wimbledon
Cameron Lancaster said he thrived off playing just ahead of fellow Spurs youth product Charlie Lee as the striker made a scoring start to his Stevenage career on Saturday.
Lancaster was himself released by Spurs in the summer, and having signed for Boro late last week he was ‘put in at the deep end’ with his first start for the club against AFC Wimbledon, and repaid boss Graham Westley’s faith with a goal in the 3-2 win.
Playing as the loan striker through the middle in a 4-3-3 formation with Chris Whelpdale on the right and Tom Pett on the left, Lancaster made the most of Lee’s match-winning performance from midfield to help Boro to a first away victory since March 1.
Speaking to the Comet, Lancaster said: “He’s an effective player, especially when you’re up there on your own. He feeds off you. It can be a bit lonely when you’re up there, but when you play with him it’s fine.
“When I was at Spurs they like to mould you into a lone striker to play up front on your own, but I can normally play anywhere around the top [of the pitch]. Left wing, striker or right wing, so it was ok for me.”
Lancaster was one of three different scorers on Saturday – in fact, Boro’s six goals in the league this season have all come from different players: Whelpdale, Connor Calcutt, Darius Charles, Dean Wells, Lancaster and Lee.
“We’ve got a few [strikers] at the club, four or five. It’s good, it keeps us motivated to start,” Lancaster said.
“I think we’ve got the strength in our squad [to make the play-offs] with our strikers to get there.”
