Preparations for Letchworth’s summer extravaganza are in full swing with organisers aiming to have an events calendar that’s bursting at the seams.

The Letchworth Festival steering committee is hitting the ground running this year to produce two weeks of lively entertainment in June.

The most eye-catching feature of the proposed bill is a carnival parade full of masks, costumes, stilt walking, classic cars, bands and entertainers.

Festival chairman Eric Adkins said: “Everything is now under way with the planning for the grand opening – which is set for Saturday, June 13, and proposed for Broadway Gardens – and the carnival parade around the town.

“All that is awaited is for someone to push the button at North Herts District Council to agree the licence application.

“Thereafter positive engagements can begin, for all of our volunteers, who continue to dedicate their time and energy for free, to establish what is hoped to be a well attended and exciting two-week June festival.”

Letchworth Sports and Tennis Club will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday, June 20 with a fun-filled day at Muddy Lane for all the family with sports, fireworks, bouncy castles, rides, and music.

And in support of this event, volunteering group Herts and Beds Bloodrunners will be holding a celebratory ride through the town centre.

The Broadway Cinema is screening a special selection of films following the theme of book adaptations throughout the festival fortnight.

Garden House Hospice also has plans to hold a tea party celebrating its 25th anniversary at the Garden Cities Exhibition.

The next festival meeting is 7.30pm on Monday, February 2, at Letchworth Par 3 Family Golf Centre on Willian Way.
