The footage will be used for a BBC One documentary series about life after the Second World War and will be broadcast next month to mark the 70th anniversary of the allied victory in Europe – VE Day – on May 8.

Producers chose to film in Stevenage as it was the first new town built in the country after the war to house Londoners who had lost their houses during the German bombing raids.

A Stevenage Borough Council spokeswoman said: “As the first new town in the country, Stevenage has a rich and unique history.

“That history and the development of the town will be featured on the BBC programme, alongside Twiggy interviewing Stevenage residents who moved to the town as children and have watched Stevenage grow into the place it is today.”
