Manager delighted that striker Brett Williams has opened his account for the club

Stevenage boss Teddy Sheringham says he’s delighted Brett Williams has opened his account for the club.

The striker scored Boro’s second goal in today’s 2-0 victory over Hartlepool United, and ran off to the corner to celebrate with his manager also celebrating down the touchline.

Speaking afterwards, Sheringham said: “I know what it’s like for a striker to get off the mark, and I’m delighted for him. Hopefully we’ll see more.”

Sheringham added: “We started very brightly but then it was as if they we quite happy for us to start brightly.

“After the initial 20 minutes we were still passing the ball around but they weren’t getting hurt.

“That was a sloppy 15-20 minutes that we had and you could tell the frustration with supporters and players alike. That’s why I was delighted that we ground out a result today.

“It wasn’t great from us. The goal in the first half came at a perfect time. The crowd was getting restless, the players were getting restless and we were getting restless on the side.

“But it takes a bit of character to turn things around when things aren’t going great. I was delighted when Fraser Franks scored a goal [to make it 1-0] and it gave us a lift.

“It did for the second half and we went on and saw the game out.”
