A pregnant woman driving with her 11-month-old daughter in her car says she was repeatedly rammed by another vehicle in a road rage incident which left her fighting for breath.

Monique Blackham was driving from Stevenage to Hitchin on the A602 – just before the road reduces from two lanes to one – when she fell victim to what she describes as ‘mindless road rage’.

The 34-year-old, who lives in Hitchin, said: “I filtered into the inside lane from the outside lane – having signalled – and had plenty of space.

“The next thing I know a car was on my bumper – with the driver flashing his lights, sounding his horn and shouting at me.

“He proceeded to straddle the white diagonal lines and side ram my car, which was much smaller.

“My baby daughter and I were terrified. I had to hold onto the steering wheel so tight so as not to be rammed into the ditch.

“The driver tailed me to the Three Moorhens roundabout and then side rammed my car again while on the roundabout, and then drove off.”

A concerned woman stopped to help Mrs Blackham and followed her back to her home, where she helped her to call the police.

Mrs Blackham, who had a 12-week scan of her unborn baby on the day of the incident, said: “I stopped at the roundabout and a lady got out of her car. I couldn’t talk. I could barely breathe. I was in major shock.”

Mrs Blackham says she has been having treatment for back, neck and shoulder injuries after her muscles went into spasm during the attack, and that her daughter has been waking much more frequently in the night since the incident on October 30.

Mrs Blackham added: “With the aggression and the violence of this incident, I really don’t feel safe. It was such an extreme reaction and, with other cars around, it could have caused a pile-up.

“I’d like to warn other drivers of this dangerous and reckless driver. I was victimised for no reason and this reckless driving doesn’t have a place on the road.”

A spokeswoman for Herts police confirmed the incident has been reported to the force but was unable to comment further.
