There have been 12 offences between April and October this year, including three in Stevenage. Each time the offender drove up and filled the car up before filling petrol cans resting on the back seat.

A blue Citroen Picasso was the car used between April and July, but since then a white Ford Transit or white Volkswagen Caddy van has been involved.

Assistant investigator Becky Ouston said: “We believe the offences have been carried out by the same person and are occurring mainly between 10am and 3pm.

“On each occasion the offender fills the vehicle with the maximum amount of fuel before filling petrol cans, and in total around £1,000 of fuel has been taken.

“I would like to speak with the man pictured as he may have information which could assist my investigation. If you can help to identify him then please call me.

“I would also like to issue a warning to the offender that by carrying cans of fuel in this way he could be putting himself and others in danger should he be involved in a crash.”
