Michael Tonge believes if Stevenage finish the league season strongly it will give the club ‘a real boost going into next season’.

Tonge scored the winner five minutes from time as Stevenage beat Luton Town 1-0 on Saturday, the club’s first win since February 13.

The former Sheffield United midfielder fired home from the penalty spot after a foul on Ben Kennedy, and with the club now nine points clear of the bottom two with seven games to go Tonge wants his side to finish strongly and build solid foundations for next season - just like Leicester City have done in the Premier League.

“We just want to make sure we secure our status first and foremost,” said Tonge.

““I’m looking around at the squad and the team and it is looking a lot stronger. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves but we do have a stronger side to be able to compete next season. You are always judged by the strength of your bench and we’ve got a good one now.

“But we’ve got Yeovil on Tuesday and we want to try and win as many games as we can during the rest of this season. We want to secure our future first and foremost but if we can win a few games starting with Yeovil it can give us a real boost going into next season.

“If you look at some teams like Leicester City - momentum is everything. Once you get a system and get used to playing a certain way anything is possible.

“I’m not comparing ourselves to Leicester I’m just using them as an example of what can happen if you have a good end to the season and use it as a launch pad to start the next season well – which is what we want to do now – starting with Yeovil.”
