Many people are glad to see the back of PE lessons and sports days when they leave school – but the driving force behind a retro-reunion event has discovered a real appetite for athletic action across North Herts.

Adam Howard the mastermind behind last year’s hugely successful Back2Schoolival sporting day at Hitchin’s King George V playing fields is busy organising bigger and even better sports days for this summer.

Adam, whose 2015 reunion inspired more than 200 old friends to come together and raise £1,200 for North Herts Sanctuary, is now busy putting the finishing touches to further events this summer.

The 24-year-old from Letchworth has teamed up with music festival Rhythms of the World for a free netball event at Knights Templar Sports Centre in Baldock on Saturday, June 4.

The day will feature a RotW live music stage all day as one of their 25 mini events planned to mark their quarter of a century, with the first act starting at midday.

There will also be a six-a-side football tournament and rounders for a retro sports day filled with family fun.

Adam – who won a Community Hero award in association with Roaring Meg retail park during Friday’s Comet Community Award’s evening at Letchworth’s Icknield Centre – said: “There will be fair rides for children, a fire engine and a caravan for karaoke. There really is something for everyone and with Macmillan Cancer Research being the lead charity of the day, it’s a great community event to get involved with. It’s been a fantastic 12 months – we’ve even been recognised by the RFU.”

Later this summer the main event returns to Hitchin Rugby Club on Saturday, July 9 where rugby will be the main focus. Back2Schoolival is also teaming up with Hitchin-based insurance firm LV= to host the women’s 10s tournaments – with a Bavarian band called Edelwiess Allstars playing ‘oompah’ music.

Back2Schoolival also plans to host a rugby tournament at the home of Old Albanians in St Albans.
