Strangers have rallied from near and far to help kit out a flat for a forces veteran who has rebuilt his life after going through post-traumatic stress disorder and homelessness.

Jackie Ann Park from the Amicus Trust – which helps people move from homelessness to independence, and often works with veterans – appealed for donations on the ‘We Love Biggleswade’ Facebook page on Monday – and was swamped with offers of help from total strangers.

The Good Samaritans offered beds, chairs, tables and other furniture, kitchen appliances, cutlery, pots and pans, towels, mattresses and even a load of grocery shopping.

Jackie said in a second post: “Yet again the good people of Biggleswade have demonstrated how much they care about the homeless situation.

“I have gone from panicking about how I am going to help him get furniture in 24 hours to being confident this can be done. Thank you so much everyone.

“With all the grant cuts it is a struggle to support people when they are ready for independence – but not so much in Biggleswade, it appears.”

Another woman added: “If we can’t support someone who was willing to give their life for us, who can we support?”

The offers came from as far away as Royston and Baldock.

Jackie said the veteran is a qualified electrician, but had been living in Canada for some years and needed to convert his credentials back to UK standards before looking for work.

She is still looking for a washing machine for the man’s flat.
