Staff and pupils at Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin were entertained when former Status Quo drummer, Jeff Rich, visited and performed during a whole school music workshop.

Pupils were taught about the history of the drum, from its origins as hollowed out tree trunks to the modern synthetic materials used today – before they all got to have a go themselves alongside Jeff.

Head Steve Mills said: “It was quite amusing at the end when several of our Year 6’s became ‘roadies’ and helped to get all the kit packed away in the van. They didn’t realise just how heavy the kit was!

“It was really interesting – even if many of the pupils hadn’t heard of Status Quo themselves. I think many were given a lesson in rock history from their parents.”

Head Girl Molly Davidson said: “It was great. I loved having a go on one of the older drums.”

Suzanne Walton, deputy head and music lead added: “The fact it was so interactive and full of energy meant the pupils were engaged from the moment they walked into the hall.”
