Schoolchildren have turned all colours of the rainbow to raise money for a charity set up in memory of an aid worker killed in Afghanistan.
Pupils at Camps Hill Primary School in Stevenage held a Colour Run on the last day of term to raise money for the Karen Woo Foundation.
The foundation was set up in the name of a 36-year-old doctor from Stevenage who was shot dead by Taliban in Afghanistan in 2010 while working with medical charity International Assistance Mission.
The Karen Woo Foundation is a grant-giving charity, focusing on supporting projects in Afghanistan which provide healthcare to communities which have little or no access to basic medical provision.
Camps Hill pupils, staff, parents and members of the community took part in a fun run while getting covered from head to toe in coloured powder from different stations placed around the school grounds.
Karen’s mum, Lynn, brother, Andrew, and sister-in-law, Lois, joined in the fun. Lynn said: “We got covered in colour as we ran round the school and out round the park. It was such a great experience, and what a way to break up for Easter.”
Andrew, who gave a talk at the school about the foundation the week before the event, added: “It was amazing and really inspiring to see the great work the school does.”
Headteacher Emma Flawn met Andrew and Lois at the Comet Community Awards last year and pledged to support the charity in 2017.
She said: “It is important for us to come together as a community and think about how we can make a difference to the wider world.
“Our annual Colour Run allows us to support charities whilst creating special memories for our families and friends for many years to come.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us to raise money and have fun.”
The amount raised is still being calculated, but last year’s event raised £4,000, which was split between Macmillan Cancer Care and the school library.
Proceeds this year will be split between the Karen Woo Foundation and ICT equipment for the school.
