Hitchin Town Hall is hosting a free day of traditional folklore activities for the whole family next month.

There will be story telling from Gordon the Toad, puppet making, Morris dancing, family folk dance sessions, workshops, live music from a melodeon player and singer, entertainment from a historical musician and interpreter, and much more.

The event has been organised by the North Herts Museum team and funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Share Museums East as part of the ‘Traditional Hertfordshire’ project, which aims to help people learn about local traditions throughout the country.

Ros Allwood, the district council’s cultural services manager, said: “This is a fantastic event that will tell everyone about stories, traditions and folklore from this area, some of which date back for hundreds of years.

“It is a really interesting project and we hope that everyone will come along and take part in an activity or two; it should be lots of fun.”

Paul Scourfield, a melodeon player and singer who is performing on the day, said: “I have enjoyed exploring the local traditions as part of this project and look forward to sharing them on the 10 June.

“There are some weird and wonderful forgotten local traditions and it has been great to explore them in this project.

“Come and find out about what used to go on in your neighbourhood!”

The event will be on Saturday, June 10, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
