Bikers and skateboarders were queueing to test out Letchworth’s brand-new £140,000 skate park when it was formally opened on Friday.
The park at Norton Common was revamped by community charity Groundwork Hertfordshire and North Herts District Council, and now caters for skateboarders of all ages and abilities.
Representatives from Groundwork held a series of meetings with a number of young skaters and BMX riders who use the park so they could provide a direct input into the new design for the park.
The new park is described as a dramatic improvement on the previous facilities. Skateboarders can now hone their skills on a range of ramps, ledges and banks, as well as a new “bowl” section and a “street” section – all constructed with super-smooth concrete.
Along with representatives from Groundwork, the park was opened by district council leader Councillor Lynda Needham and executive member for leisure Councillor Jane Gray.
Opening the new skate park, Ms Gray said: “It’s amazing to see the skate park in action.
“This new facility will provide high-quality skate experiences for people all ages and abilities, and we hope that it will help contribute towards encouraging active and healthy lifestyles.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported this project – including those who participated in the consultations, as their ideas were instrumental in the final result.”
Groundwork Hertfordshire landscape architect Nicola Murphy added: “We would like to thank everyone who gave their time to input their thoughts into the design of the skate park.
“They have helped guide us to providing this great new facility that can be used by all abilities – whether you are just starting off or an experienced rider.”
