Hitchin’s historic parish church is to block off one of its chapels as a monument to the strife of Indian partition.
St Mary’s Church will close Trinity chapel from Monday to highlight the loss of life and holy sites for other faiths during the partition in 1947.
Canon Michael Roden, vicar of Hitchin, said: “We at St Mary’s want to build bridges between the faith communities after the great suffering amid the partition.”
The monument, created by Leonard Rakovskiy, will be on show from 9am to 5pm daily until November 23.
Interfaith Week will also see Child of the Divide, the educational show touring the UK after its pilot at St Mary’s, come to Letchworth’s Broadway Theatre on Tuesday night.
Canon Roden said: “We’re proud to have been instrumental in bringing this to the country’s attention.”
The show starts at 7.30pm, and on stage afterwards Canon Roden will interview BBC journalist Kavita Puri – who put together the Radio 4 series Partition Voices.
