Lead flashings have been stolen from a Stevenage school’s roof, leaving almost £1,000 worth of damage.
At some point between the end of term on July 20 and August 8 the material was taken from the roof of St Nicholas Primary and Nursery School in Six Hills Way.
A school spokeswoman said: “Not only are school budgets stretched to breaking point, but now someone with criminal intent has been on the premises during the holidays and stolen the lead flashings from the school roof – causing significant damage following the first downpour of the summer.
“Fortunately the school was occupied by a play scheme when the rain started, and they reported the leak so we were able to minimise any serious damage by putting all the buckets they could find to catch the water.
“The school is unable to claim the cost of the damage back through the insurance and so we start the school year with a repair bill of nearly £1,000.”
A police spokeswoman said: “We received a report on August 11 that lead flashing material had been stolen from the roof of St Nicholas.
“If you saw anyone working on the school roof, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area between the July 20 and August 8, please call 101 quoting crime reference 41/26342/18.”
