Remembrance Sunday 2019: Stevenage and North Herts gather to honour the armistice

In Stevenage, record numbers gathered around the war memorial at the Bowling Green in Old Town on Remembrance Sunday, after a parade led by the Harpenden Pipe Band made its way down the High Street.

More than 4,000 were programmes were printed, with over 90 wreaths thought to have been laid on the memorial - including those placed by head boy and head girl of John Henry Newman School and Barclay School. Richard Lott, chairman of the Stevenage Royal British Legion branch, said it was a "huge honour" to lay a wreath for the first time this year.

A further service was held in the Town Square this morning, where a two-minute silence was observed in in honour of World War I Armistice Day.

Over 60 pupils from Woolenwick Junior School attended the service, and each pupil was presented with a 2019 poppy pin.

In Hitchin, Remembrance Sunday was marked in the afternoon with a service at St Mary's Church, followed by a wreath laying at the war memorial.

The service was led by new St Mary's vicar - Rev Christopher Bunce - who was inaugurated at an official ceremony last Wednesday. A parade set off at 2pm from Hitchin Town Hall on Brand Street, leading round to St Mary's where the service was held at 2.30pm.

Letchworth, Baldock and North Herts villages also gathered to pay their respects on Sunday, with thousands of people attending local services.

Over 700 people attended the Remembrance Service in Baldock - with around 30 wreaths laid on the war memorial.

Further services were held today to mark Armistice Day - commemorating when the armistice was signed between the allies of World War I and Germany.
