The sun was shining for this year's St George's Day celebrations on Saturday, with families lining the streets to watch parades in towns including Stevenage, Letchworth and Hitchin.

Members of the Scout Movement, of all ages, were out in force for the event, which remembers St George, England's patron saint.

The parade down St George's Way in Stevenage was led by a marching band, while Garden City Samba played at Hitchin's parade, with Councillor David Barnard describing it as a "great occasion, with colour and music".

There are continued calls to make St George's Day a national holiday in England, which would bring it in line with St Andrew's Day in Scotland and St Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland.

The move would need to be approved by the Queen, by Royal Proclamation, but the Government has no current plans to request it. St David's Day in Wales is not currently a national holiday either.
