Boro are looking into the possibility of taking Preston North End youngster Phil Appiah on loan for the rest of the season.
The Toronto-born midfielder played during the reserves' 3-1 defeat to Northampton reserves last night and is someone that Boro first team coach Dino Maamria has recommended to manager Graham Westley.
Appiah has come through the ranks at Preston and has carved out a reputation as a tough-tackling midfield powerhouse, who has a big future at Deepdale.
Boro also looked at three other trialists last night with the coaching staff looking at taking on MK Dons youngster Mick O'Hanlon after he was released by the League One club.
Colchester defender James Hammond and Julio Barnes, who has just been released from Rochdale, also played but Boro are unlikely to follow up their interest in the pair.
