More details have emerged as to how a man was crushed in an industrial accident yesterday.

Air ambulance, medics, fire crews and police were scrambled just after 9am after a 37-year-old became trapped under a seven-foot, quarter-tonne washer at the Hitchin warehouse of industrial piping suppliers Viking Johnson.

Luckily, quick thinking workmates dashed to a crane to lift the weight off the man before medics arrived to treat him.

Letchworth-based paramedic, Mike Yeldham, who attended the scene said: "The man had been freed from underneath a metal washer which had fallen on top of him prior to our arrival. Following extensive treatment and stabilisation at the scene by the air ambulance doctor and paramedics he was taken to Lister Hospital."

He was later found to be suffering from a fractured pelvis.

Ambulance service spokesman, Gary Sanderson, praised the workers who had come to his aid. "The actions by the staff no doubt saved this man life", he said.
