AN ILLEGAL immigrant has been caught by UK Border Agency officers and is in detention awaiting removal from the UK.
The 49-year-old Nigerian man was caught during a raid at an address in Shephall Way in Stevenage on Thursday (July 9).
He has overstayed his visitor's visa.
Gail Adams, UK Border Agency regional director, said: "We are committed to tracking down and removing anyone living and working in the UK illegally.
"This was a hugely productive piece of work."
The operation comes at a time of massive reform to the UK's immigration system.
ID Cards for foreign nationals are being introduced which will help protect against identity fraud and illegal working.
The Government is rolling out an Australian-style points-based system for managing migration, ensuring only those with the skills the UK needs are allowed to work.
Employers of illegal immigrants can be fined up to 10,000 per illegal employee.
Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/employers
Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business in Herts can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
