STAFF looking after Rusty who was found abandoned and starving in a Baldock street have been overwhelmed by the public's response to help financially with his care.

A Rusty's Appeal website was set up with a target of 8,000 and in a week 3,402 has already been promised.

One Comet reader, who wished to remain anonymous, even offered 200 towards a reward for information and if the money was not used for that it could go to the Wood Green Animal Shelter who have been caring for Rusty.

This week Rusty was taking a break at the home of a member of the Shelter's staff and enjoying the company of other dogs and when he is taken for a walk is wearing a T-shirt to protect is hairless skin from the sun.

"The response from the public to Rusty's plight has been phenomenal. Rusty is responding well to his medication and is certainly a lot better than when he was brought in here," said a spokesman for the Shelter.

"Rusty is staying with a member of staff to get him away from the kennel environment and to be with other dogs and he is enjoying it.

"He is wearing a T-shirt when he is outside to protect his skin from the sun because his hair has not grown back yet."
